Record number of visitors in Arktikum in 2025

In 2025, Arktikum welcomed a total of 172,661 visitors. That is 20,000 more than in the previous year. In just over a decade, the annual number of visitors has grown by as much as 100,000.

Tourism in Rovaniemi is growing rapidly, and this is evident not only in local companies but also in other destinations of the city. Museum and Science Centre Arktikum reached again last year a new record number of visitors with over 170,000 customers, of which 65% are international guests.

Arktikum is home to the Regional Museum of Lapland and the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland and its Science Centre focusing on the Arctic. Completely renovated exhibition Arctic Opposites opened in December 2024, and it presents the special features of the Arctic region and is one of the main attractions of Arktikum.

– International interest towards the Arctic region has been high for a long time, and it is not going away. On the contrary. Exhibitions give us an opportunity to reach an ever-wider audience and tell them about the phenomena of the Arctic region. That is why it is extremely important that we produce up-to-date content for exhibitions, chief executive producer Nicolas Gunsaly says.

In addition to its strong visual appeal and interactivity, the new exhibition has received praise for its educational value. According to Gunslay, international visitors take with them an understanding of the Arctic region and how it is intertwined with the rest of the world.

– Before visiting the exhibition, most people are unaware of how dramatically climate change is affecting the Arctic region, exhibition designer Anna Hyvönen gives an example.

During the highest winter season from the beginning of December until the end of February Arktikum is open daily between 10 am–6 pm. In March, the house returns to normal opening hours, with the exhibitions closed on Mondays.
